detected HDD & CD should be detected before system POST, Power On Self Test (beep), and detected devices are usually displayed on screen as they are detected

assuming your CD is IDE, an IDE channel (a motherboard usually has 2 IDE channels & each channel can have only 2 devices connected too it
  • 1 is the master
  • 1 is the slave
master / slave is only to identify the device

to set the device as master or slave you move the jumper at the back of the device & set it to master, slave or C/SEL (cable select)

all cable select is: it's a way to identify devices, the master is connected furthest from the motherboard & the slave device is connected to the centre IDE connector

all this info is useless if you are using a SATA CD, but i've assumed it's IDE, am i correct ?
