Default 2 Build Or Buy

Hello All
This is my first post and have always wanted to build my owne PC, I have'nt a clue where to start, I would like too build my son a decent PC, So that he'll have a PC in his room for studies oh ya and the internet,to be able too chat with all his buddies that he will leave behind, Ya i guess i could go out and buy a Dell or HP, or some other brand but this has always been something i wanted to do build one and then maybe another and another. since i dont have alot of time to read up on all lastest and greatest, although iam asking for someone too spec me a couple out, My price range would be around $600/1000, probably a smokin viedo card, something that would run xp real well. And also is there a patient someone that will be able to answer alot of my qustions time/time..

I agree with everything Matt555 has provided except the motherboard.
I beleive that SiS has been lacking in the hardware department lately and it wouldn't be as good as a performer from the nForce 4 or VIA chipsets.
Something along the lines of the ASUS A8N-E (nForce 4) or the ASUS A8V-E Deluxe (VIA) would suit you better i think. They'll probably retail a little higher but it's worth it.

Yeah I wasn't too sure about the motherboard.

Also if you want a monitor set aside a bit more money for a TFT than a CRT.
