AGP mystry

Hi all

I have fair knowledge of most things.
I taught Stephen Hawkins most of What he knows and women do not pose too much of a threat to me anymore.

However, can someone please try and explain this to me:

I have downloaded and installed the lates display drivers for my G card, ATI Radeon A9200 128MB. Now I have myself a lovely control pannel. One of the tabs of this lovely pannel is the 'SMARTGART(tm)' tab which can potentialy set the AGP speed. I say potentialy because I can never change any of the settings.
Please see attachment.

Now if I do change any of the settings, it asks if I wish to restart the computer in order for the changes to take effect. I click on yes but upon restart the pannel resets to the same state.

In my chipset settings in BIOS, my AGP speed is set to Auto (can be X4, X8 or Auto) and I enabled fast write. However this mystery remains if I disable fast writing and set the AGP speed to X8.

Now I have not got any special problems and the computer is working absolutly fine. But I still think that maybe I am missing out?

It sounds like your chipset drivers aren't installed. Fastwrites can add a little bit more speed, but have been known to make systems less stable. The speed increase is so insignificant, it's really unnoticeable except in benchmarking, and even then, it's not affecting things all that much.

When you say 'Chipset drivers' what exactly do you mean?
Is it drivers I get from the mobo maker (ASROck) or the G card (asus) maker?

The chipset would be whatever chipset is on the motherboard. The video card has it's own drivers, which are ATi's. Asus may have made some customized drivers to support features they add, but you can use ATi's just fine. The motherboard's drivers should be off the company's website, but you can snag the latest and greatest off the website of whoever makes that chipset (Via, SiS, Intel, etc.).

I visited VIA's site but could not find any mention of chiset drivers.
Maybe I am looking in the wrong place.....?
Anyway I am not bothering with this anymore as the computer seem to be fine.

If you keep your 'My Hardware' section up to date and you're using the Asrock p4v88...

Ahaaaa! I see.

Problem solved!

Non UK residents would probably not know what a div is.
So I will explain because the lesson is important!

Div = Idiot or stupid beyond comprehension.....

That is what I am so please add the word to your dictionary and put my name next to it.

One little driver package available for my motherboard sat there nicely and waited for me to download it and install it. But me the genious thought it beneeth him....

Well - downloaded, installed, no more AGP mystery and off we go.

And now non british people know what a proper div is!!!
