Default Alternate way of installing nvidia drivers?

Hi

I recently got a new laptop (inspiron 9400 from dell) and i really wanna install the latest and greatest drivers from nvidia, but "aparently" you can only install the nvidia drivers that dell supplies from the dell website.. however, the nvidia drivers on dells website are OLD.. (7x.xx series, i believe)

now, when i tried isntalling the drivers (the newest ones) directly from the nvidia website, i get an error saying "setup could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware", then it closes the setup... hmm. sketchy.

I have heard of people that have found alternate ways of installing nvidia drivers, and bypassing this..

is there any other way of doing this? if so, can someone give me a.. kinda setp-by-step process on how to do it? im not that great with windows..
thanks in advance

andy

(by the way, my graphic card is a geforce 7800go with winxp)

Chances are you stuck using the Dell drivers. Dell will add it's own bits to the generic nVidia chipset, therefore rendering nVidia's driver useless.

What nVidia chipset do you have anyway? The latest nVidia drivers don't work with some of their older cards.... As I found out the other day

Try these legacy drivers here

You could also try these 3rd party drivers from Omega here

IIRC, the GeForceGo series drivers are a little different than the standard GeForce drivers, so that may be the reason your running into problems.
