Another hardware aint so bad on Linux thread

Following my sheer joy at having no problem setting up an proprietory Marvell Wireless PCI Windows network card driver using NDISWrapper, I now bring you another "Myth beater" about Linux and hardware = The all-in-one printer, scanner and copier!

My mate bought me an HP Deskjet F2180 all-in-one printer the other day as a gift. My initial thought was "Oh great, it's an HP so printing should work with Linux." But then it dawned on me "the scanner function is going to be dead weight". My mate has no idea about Linux and so wasn't to know that I may have difficulties with this printer.

So come installation, I plugged the printer into my computer, and to my relief, a pop-up box appeared in Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon's task bar stating "HP Deskjet 2100 installed and configured"! I test page later confirmed it working - and without any configuration on my part! Awesome!

So I thought, "what about this bloody scanner?". I launched Xsane Image Scanner from the Graphics menu and..... woah!!! the scanner was there! No configuration needed! I put a random piece of paper in the scanner and hit "Scan". Bingo! It was scanned! Scary indeed.

The funny side to the story is that after all my panicking about Ubuntu not having drivers, it was in fact Windows XP that did not have drivers when connecting to the shared printer on Ubuntu! I had to resort to the HP driver CD... God how 1998

congrats mega, i've found most stuff works on *nix (hardware) but, obviously finding how to make it work can be problematic, but, congrats again

Printer support has always been good for me, gone are the days where you have to configure the CUPS server yourself, albeit the nice web based interface, most printers now work out of the box.

Can't ask for more in that respect.

personally i don't own a printer, i did buy 1 once, but, it obviously dried up (i think it was a Xerox inkjet)
