i just bought a new laptop yesterday and i wanna install security software before doing anythign with it. I have the mcaffee software through comcast and i have the whole Security Suite from mcaffee as well. So is that a good way to secure the laptop or would it be best if i was to say get the new NOD32 software that im hearding some people rave about?? or any other anti virus software out there that you guys could possibly recommend.

Best antivirius software in the world is free!

But seriously - no security packages are 100% secure and it is very important to remmeber this point!!!

Most programs work and behave very similarlly. Some are more intuitive and some take a bit more getting used to. Some tend to 'eat' more resources while keeping your PC relatively safe. I used both the mentioned and can say nothing wrong about them. The only thing I would comment is that I started my computing adventure with a Dell PC pre-loaded with Norton. As soon as the free year's subscription finished and my warranty with Dell ended I removed that cancer and installed AVG free addition.

It is a must these days to have A security package for you PC. What is best is a bit like - what colour you prefer.....
Both products you mention are well respected products with proven track record. Are their worth the buck? If you are a good, responcible user, these will do just fine and will serve you well. If you are going to test their ability by downloading doddgy stuff - well.... expect to be stung whatever you are using.

I used, and use AVG free edition for the last 5 years or so and cannot see any reason to switch.

Make sure you get updates daily and stay away from illigal s**t. Also, be a good idea to get some firewall solution.....

I use Avast home edition. It is updated pretty much daily. I have had absolutely no problems with it. And the home dition is free while the commercial version isn't. It's a very nice anti-virus.

McAffee security suite scored "very poor" according to this testing site. You can find it in the second table if you scroll down.

I like Online Armor firewall. Comodo 3 got rather annoying for me.

avg free 8.0 is the best bang for no bucks-irun it side by side with kaspersky 7.0 which cost 70.00 but was FREE after rebates from staples and mnfg-they play nicely together and there is now a free version of kaspersky available for download-worst could happen is goin' nuts trying to decide
