Default can't connect my laptop to my tv???

I've connected my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop to my television via a s-video/scart lead connecting cable but I can only get my desktop to display in black and white, when I go into display>settings and try to save the tv as primary monitor it keeps reverting back to the laptop monitor when I apply the changes?
I'm trying to watch downloaded movies through my tv using windows media player without much success, can anybody suggest what I should do next?

HI M8, in your display setting there should be a setting for TV system, change to PAL or NTSC, don't know were your from that should sort your clolour out, check your TV.
For playing movies i would use divx, nero showtime, winamp, or my favourite jetAudio players. Good luck M8 and hope this is of some help

Hi,

There's no option to change between NTSC and PAL in my display settings???

....for the record the material I'm trying to view isn't subject to any copyright laws or illegal in any way shape or form.
