Default Can't O'clock Celeron D 352 beyond 3.85GHz

Hi,

I have made my first attempt at overclocking and managed to get a new Celeron D 352 from 3.2GHz to 3.85GHz by changing the FSB from 133 to 160. It is very stable (ran Prime95 for a couple of hours) and stays cooler than 45 degrees.

When I increased the FSB to 161 and rebooted I couldn't even get far enough to go into BIOS setup, and in the end had to reset the BIOS.

It seems odd that FSB 133 to 160 is absolutely fine, and 160 to 161 is absolutely catastrophic, do you think that 160 is simply be the limit of my processor, or could something else be limiting me?

BTW I can't amend the CPU multiplier, and whatever i do my RAM runs at a 5:4 ratio to my FSB.

Any comments appreciated,

Thanks,
Tom

Did you go from 133 to 160 without increasing the cpu voltage? That would seem pretty impressive if you did. And if you did, then step up the voltage a tiny tiny bit at a time.

Hi,

Thanks for the response. My BIOS does not allow me to amend the cpu voltage (but oddly I can set the RAM voltage to LOW/MEDIUM/HIGH/AUTO).

So yes I did go from 133 to 160 on the stock voltage, which according to SPeedfan is a mere 1.28v(!).

I'm guessing that my answer is that this low voltage is ok at 3.841GHz but can't manage 3.865GHz, which is what setting the FSB to 161 would generate.

Another factor is that whilst I have upgraded/replaced nearly all of my PC, I still have the original PSU, and going by the quality of the rest of the crap I have taken out, it will be as cheap and nasty as they come...

I don't suppose that it is possible to change my BIOS to a more liberal one? I guess it can't be straightforward because I have never read of people advising it...

Cheers,
Tom

You definately want to upgrade your BIOS to the latest version. With that updated version you may be able to tweak your voltage settings on the proc.

However, if you have a crappy PSU I really wouldn't recommend over-clocking. It can turn a semi-slow proc to a dead proc quite easily if your PSU happens to fluctuate and it hasn't got the correct safety features.

In the end, I would really recommend flashing an updated BIOS, and seeing if you've got the option for the cpu voltage. If the other hardware in your rigg is crap, I would look at turning up your Multiplier and voltage on your proc instead of the FBS.
