Default CD-ROM driver problem! >_<

I have just gotten a new Cybertron computer and when I first got it my CD drive wouldn't work so I got a new one. The new one worked for the first few days(When I reformated and installed a few things) then I didn't use the CD drive for about 2 months. I recently tried to use it again and when I put the disk into the CD drive it would read the CD. I tired about 10 different disks and it would read any of them. Now I can't even get the CD drive to open.

The company I got the CD drive from is Retail Plus.

Do you have the CD on the same IDE cable as your hard-drive? If so you could try putting it as a secondary master and see if that makes a difference. I'm assuming you have only one hard-drive.

From experience CD-ROM drives can be very tempermental. You could try to un-install and then re-install the drivers, see if that works. Also, check all the cables to make sure they are plugged in properly (but pleeeeease turn the computer off and plug out the power cable first!). Another test you could do, if you have a Windows boot CD, is to try to boot your computer from the CD. If you can then most likely the problem is a software one, not hardware.

I don't even remember installing any drviers. All I did was plug in the Cd drive and then that was it.

Could that be the reason it isn't working? Cause it didn't come with a install disk or anything. Is there a site where I could get the drivers? I checked and it dosn't seem like the company has a site. The comapny is Retail Plus.

Your CD-ROM drive will always have drivers, it's just that most of them wil work fine with the default ones that Windows installs. Some CD-ROMs need their own driver but yours does not sound like one of them. Have you tried booting from a CD? That would give us some more clues as to what is wrong. You also mentioned that you can't open the drive door, can you open it before Windows loads, i.e. if you're in the BIOS config can you open it then?

Yeah, I tried open the CD drive while it was in BIOS and it still didn't. I think it might be stuck though cause when I press the button to open it it just makes a click sound.

And I don't really understand what you mean by "Have you tried booting from a CD?"

Internal CD-ROMS do not need drivers. They are standard ATAPI devices, and will be recognised by the BIOS just like a hard drive. Reinstalling the motherboard drivers may help. Also, check the jumpers on your devices and make sure that the drive at the end of the IDE cable is set for MASTER and the drive in the middle is SLAVE. If there is only one device on the cable, place it at the end of the cable and designate it as MASTER with the jumper. Do not use the CABLE SELECT position, as this can cause weird problems.

If none of the above helps, it's possible that you have a CD-ROM with low-grade plastic lense, and that the lense has become warped due to prolonged heat exposure. In that case, the solution is to replace the drive.

Yeah, I will try some of that.

But how do I reinstall the mother board drivers? They are on a CD and my CD drive dosn't work. If it dosn't start working soon I think im just going to buy a new one.

Check the manufacturers website, they should be available from there.
