Default crashing after adding old hard drive back up to new hard drive

I am not very experienced at upgrading. on installing a new 250Gig H/drive as slave I saved a back up of my old hard drive to it then changed it to master and reset the back up. I had installed XP to the new hard drive which was working but I couldn't access my old files on the old drive as slave.
This doesn't seem to make any sense but maybe someone will understand waht I have done and be able to help me out.
I have my pc running with the old drive as master and can see the files on the slave. but when I make it master it just crashes before it boots up, also it is only reading 135gig of the 250. I have a jetway 601cf motherboard.
any help much apprec iated

My Computer

Check the jumpers on both drives, assuming they are ATA.

I set up the jumpers to the correct pins, I find it strange that the new drive was booting up until I put the back up data from the original drive on it.
could windows be looking at the old drive boot sequence from the back up data. I am just a beginner/novice so my terminoligy may be lacking a lot.
thanks Don
