Hi,
I have this problem: my computer and net connection works fine, but my computer disconnects every 1-2 hours from network. The character of disconnection is weird - the system doesnt alert me that th cable was disconnected or anything, when I type /ipconfig it shows that everythings ok but when I try to browse the web, connect msn or whatever it cant connect - it times out. I am even disconnected from LAN so I cant ping or access other computers in network nor the router. The time between disconnections differ ... one time it last through night, other time it disconnects once the system boots. I noticed that it often disconnects when I am downloading something or using too many internet apps at once. When I am trying to use torrents it disconnects within minutes, same thing when I am downloading few files at the same time - I think it has something with number of connections. I have the Kerio Personal Firewall installed and windows firewall disabled. When I try to enable it, it doesnt help. I tried different network cables, although the net is fine on other computers that I have in network - even when I am using torrents on them. My spec is: AMD AM2 3800+ 64 X2 Asus M2N-E Kingston 2GB RAM Leadtek GeForce 7600GT The network card is integrated in Asus M2N-E motherboard that has nVidia chipset on it. I tried to reinstall the system two times but I am still not sure if its software or hardware issue. Any advice appreciated, thanks. |

Hi,
The next time it disconnects, try pinging your NIC card. Do a ping 127.0.0.1 If it doesnt respond back, there could be something wrong with the embedded NIC. If you have a spare NIC card someplace, you may want to try your computer with that and see if there are any disconnects as well.

How do you ping something? Like your router or the NIC?

Hi,
To ping something you need to open the command window. You would want to click start, then choose run, then time cmd to open the window. In the window, if you want to ping your NIC, you would just type ping 127.0.0.1. If you get response times back you know that it is working ok. You can also ping the router, you just need to know what the internal ip address is. My linksys one by default is 192.168.1.1 i think. If your ping is hanging looking for a response, you can hit ctrl + c to abort it. You can also ping domain names like www .google.com to check to see if you have an internet connection. Its a really useful tool to test your network connectivity

Cool, thanks. Easy command haha. But I would never have known about it...
This stuff can't just be done through the windows GUI, can it?
