The rule with drives should be that unless you have an issue with the drive, updating the firmware is an unecessary risk even if small.
If your drive is an OEM then stick to the rule. If it is branded, the supplier will advertise updates on its site.
Off Topic:
I managed to solve read/write issues by updating the ASPI layer (ForceASPI). Windoes XP's version of the layer can get corrupt so using ForceASPI version allows the user to refresh the layer at any time with a better version of the layer (WTF that means - for more details, Google for ForceASPI)

Update: Sorry, just read the thread again so ignore most of the above.
Try the ForceASPI solution first, after making sure your IDE/SATA cables are connected properly. If you can, try and replace the current cable to ensure it is not the cable which is faulty.
