Default Free Software Thread

Please, do not post any comments, this thread should only contain a list of freeware software, thank you.

Free is good.

This is for legally free software. For any OS.

DO NOT post any links to places where you can illegally download stuff like Photoshop, Windows, etc... Check the rules if you're not sure on what is or isn't acceptable.

Links to other lists are fine, so long as they don't violate the rules.

If in doubt, don't post it.

And now to kick off this thread...

defrag on the fly

A free defragmenter that is better than the Windows defragger. It's only for Windows NT OSes (WinNT, Win2k, WinXP Pro/Home). There are two programs to download: 1 is a command line defragger (don't worry, it's fast), and one defragger that sits in the background and only defrags with very little disk usage going on. There's an FAQ to read to answer everything.

WinRAR @ http://www.rarlabs.com

WinRar is a compression program that is much more powerful than WinZip. It handles many formats, including ZIP, RAR and ACE, to name a few.

For instance, I had to compress a 66mb folder. WinZip compressed it to 47mb, and WinRAR to 36mb.

http://www.repairfile.com/
Its called AZR
Advaced Zip Repair, found this one a while ago. Ever had corrupted self-extracting headers or corrupted zip files? no more! this will repair them, I've never had it fail on me. I'm pretty sure the download these days is only a trial but still a life saver.

IZArc - http://www.izsoft.dir.bg/

IZArc is an all-in-one compression utility for Windows which is 100% freeware (but not OSS, unfortunately). It completely replaces the need for Winzip, WinRAR, WinACE, etc. Not only can IZArc accomplish the same functions as the aforementioned software, it can do it better (and it looks pretty, too).

DVD Profiler.

There's a free version and a paid version. The free version does run ads, but only while you use the thing. None of it has come up as spyware or malware either. I use this to keep track of my collection (as you can see in my sig). It's awesome, since you can put DVD's on a wishlist to remember when it's coming out.

The images are grainy, but you can get clear ones if you go and buy a copy instead of using the free version. There's some toher options too, but nothing that makes me want to buy it.

My Computer

http://www.arjsoftware.com/
Used it a long time ago, when my CD ROM was broken. It can break down any file, regardless of size, into smal fragements of 1.2 MB which can be copied on to a floppy.
Apart from that it has some file management and compressional features too, but I never just it.

Not be the proverbial rain-o'er-the-parade, but check out Firefox, the best browser I know of. It blocks pop-ups with no additional software, can be skinned, configured to flush cookies automatically, and allows tabbed browsing. Plus, if you choose to add Extensions, you can add virtually limitless functionality!

According to Mozilla.org, Firefox requires at least:

* Pentium 233 MHz (Recommended: Pentium 500MHz or greater)
* 64 MB RAM (Recommended: 128 MB RAM or greater)
* 52 MB hard drive space

Anti-Virus: AVG 6/7
Popup Blocker: Smart Popup
Spyware Removal / Prevention:
Spyware Blaster - Prevention
Spybot Search & Destroy - download it & do this: (Click on "Mode" (top Menu) now select "Advanced", now in the left bar click "settings", "settings again, now scroll down until you get to "system start", now make sure these settings are ticked or enabled: "Automatically Run At Startup" + "Run Check at Program Start" + "Fix all problems at program start", now scroll down, goto "Web Update", select: "search the web for new versions" + "download updates if available online".

now run spyware blaster, and re-enable the scanning of all "protections", it will now double what it protects against as it works alongside Spybot S&D.

Firewall: Sygate Personal Firewall Very good firewall considering its free, and easy to setup and use, no complications.

Remote Administration: (Virtual Desktop) RealVNC (goto this page, dont fill in any details, just select your operating system and click "download". (setup the server.. on your machine you would like to administer, and the viewer on the machine u will "view" on)

Media: Winamp 5.05

hope this helps, i'll add as i remember more stuff.

Spyware wise it's always a good idea to run two different Anti-Spyware programs. Spybot is very good, however you should ideally run these:

1.Adaware Personal (now known as AdawareSE Personal)
2.SpyBot S&D
3.Spyware Blaster

Spyware blaster is a program that prevents spyware from being installed on your machine, only problem with AdawareSE is they have changed it so it is free, however you have to manually select each individual peice of spyware to remove it, which.. if you find a couple of hundred of peices loaded on your machine.. can get quite tiresome selecting them.

Registry Fix free to use, however for a very small number of dollars you can purhcase the full version which allows for much more advanced capabilities (although still brilliant as stand alone free-ware)
