I have a hard drive on my gaming machine that is constantly seeking. The light is pretty much on solid and I can hear the drive crunching away. Indexing is turned off, CPU is at 1% usage when idle, I can't figure out why it is doing this.

i assume you OS is XP, and XP does scandisk & defrag at certain times, but, it should eventually.

to check if that is what happening, "My Computer" -> "Control Panel" -> FIND FAST If that is the case, you stop the service if you want to do something, but, i guess you'd better start the service after you've done what you want

Edit: also do a virus scan, or it could be a sign that the HDD is failing, go to your HDD manufactures website & download their diagnostic tools

It's definitly not a virus. I'm using vista ultimate. I've tried to run a spinrite but it sits there saying "selecting drive for use" and then just fails. Not sure if it makes a difference but its a sata drive.

Have you run the reliability and performance monitor ,to check for disc errors?
