i mean... really, and i wasn't going to bring this up, but of the few internet communities i'm a part of, HWF is the only one with sensible people.:D That said, everything that comes pouring out of there is just insane riot after the next. I mean, on one hand, good for them, they are taking charge and doing something for change in their country, on the other hand... its really sad when a government is that corrupt and chooses hostile takeover of its own country vs a diplomatic solution... Anyways... that stuff is insane over there.

That situation sounds so familiar. *cough*..China..*cough*.

Why don't they just evacuate all innocent people, nuke the place, and then put the innocent people back when the radiation is gone?

I am sorry to say that the Iranians are the ones to blame, in a way. This is a sweeping statement, I know. If you remember, befor the revolution, Iran was a cosmopolitan, tolerant state, very much in touch with the international community. I could be dangerously wrong but if it wasn't for the people who supported the revolution movement, they would have not been in this pickle now....

Or is it again a case of a fanatic minority setting the stage for the frightened majority....?

Yeah, the real news has been covering the situation pretty well. I had found a link(along with about 6 others), posted it elsewhere and then some one saw it and didn't like it so it was deleted... BUT, it showed for a mathematical fact that the election was rigged....(based on statistics given from the current governments camp)

Its pretty hard to tell for some one who is not actually there, but to me its looks like there is a whole lot of people who are upset, not just a small group. Of which, people change with generations, the opposition to the current government are much more progressive, ie friendly relations with the US, woman's rights, etc.

I really like Amadinejad's remark about Obama meddling like Bush. Uh, right...why don't you ask Saddam about that 'meddling' thing...

.... to bad that stuff has been going on for so many presidencies now its not even funny.. and Americans are just to ignorant as a whole to ether realize what is happening, or to stubborn to think we are actually making a situation worse vs better...

Did you forget who put Saddam in power in the first place? Hint: it was the US government.

I am really embarrassed to re-read this now that I have watched a magnificent movie called Persepolis. First of all watch it as it is a brilliant film. I will not expand as this is the wrong place. But really... watch it.
Secondly, the Shah's ruled Iran with an iron fist with little regard to the little man. The reason they were so involved with the international community was to further their needs and causes not their people's. The fundamentalist religious party which took the leadership after the revolution, was, ironically, elected by the people. How history seems to repeat itself even in parallel circumstances.... So yes, the people of Iran are to blame for the situation which started this thread but it is a very unfair statement... little did their parents/grandparents know....

its funny, I was reading this adn a line from Lawrence of Arabia came to mind about how the Arabs would forever be a small and insignificant people as long as they continued to fight tribe on tribe etc, and although this is on a national level it still seems to ring true to pretty much every situation in the middle east today.

I remeber during the invasion of Iraq the news talked of it as "the craddle of civilisation". Didn't look very civilised to me, but of course, thats our fault............
