I just bought a brand new Acer Aspire 5630 with the following specs :

    Intel Duo Core T5500
    1 GB DD2 Ram
    Nividia Geforce Go 7300 128MB
8X DVD Super Multi layer Drive
    160 GB SATA HDD
    Windows XP Media Center

Im experiencing a strange problem with this 3 week old brand new laptop! Sometimes it just shut down and restart without any notice closing all apps running without saving anything which really sucks! And this is happening on A/C power. I hardly used it on its battery. Before XP comes up it goes through that hdd file checking (which can be skipped).

The problem is that this was bought from Canada by a friend which was there on holiday and over here in Malta, Acer does not exist so I cant take it to the dealer for warranty cover.

But i dont think its a major problem. Is there any log file I can view that can help me figure out from what this thing is coming from ?

does it just shut off as if the power is unplugged, or does it do a propor shutdown as if someone has pressed the shutdown button?, if its the second one, i think it may be a software related problem.

You could always try a system restore from control panel and restore to an earlier day as some software may be causing a problem, when exatly did the problem start, what were you doing the day before, or during the day the problem started on your computer, what software did you install? It could also be a virus too, i would reccomend scanning for spyware and Viruses.

The only software installed is :McAffee antivirus First thing as it booted! with all the latest updates, MS Office 2003, Firefox 2.0 and Macoromedia dreamweaver 8.2

It does not do a proper shutdown at all ! It shuts off as if the power cord was unplugged!

I dont really think there is a need to restore the system to an earlier date because imo that software installed will not cause any problems to it!

Hmmm, this is intresting, Shuts off as if its is just the power cord been unplugged.

I do not have much experience with laptops, infact i have never used one in my life!, but i am guessing it could be due to overheating issues, maybe something to do with the power supply?

Were do you live? Malta? and you got the computer from Canada?, could be an issue with different power supply requirements.

Yes I live in Malta. The laptop is supplied with an international mains charger / plug and the manual states that it can be used anywhere worldwide. So I dont think this is the cause! Overheating ? I will install I PC Wizard 2006 to see the temperature the CPU is running and I will try to look for that error log to see if I find anything interesting.

I was not ignoring guys ! I made this post from another PC thats why I couldnt give too much details!

So when I switched on the laptop at 12.30pm this morning the same thing happened after less than 5 mins. (It was switched off from the power button yesterday and it did a normal shutdown). It happened while I was browsing a site or two. After it rebooted automatically I went to the Event Viewer but NO error where reported in the applications tab and system. While in the Event viewer it rebooted again! Went to check again but still NO errors where reported. Everything in today's date 28/11/06 was just "information" .

From PC Wizard 2006 I got this information too :

    Processor Temp Core1 : 44deg c

    Processor Temp Core2 : 49deg c

    GPU Temp: 49deg c

    HDD Temp: 36deg c

It also seems that the problem is happening at the moment when the laptop is switched on and working for the first 20 mins. But im not 100% sure about this because I didnt use much after this morning. But while writing this post it didnt reboot !

Let me know if u need any more information.

Try running the laptop on AC without the battery installed and also on battery power alone.
Also try turning off un-neccesary hardware such Cardbus, wired or wireless LAN or both via ePower Management.
In addition, always make sure the CPU vent is never covered. Laptops olny provide just enough
cooling to get by and can overheat very easily. Let us know what happens.

I tried running on A/C only without battery installed but it didnt help either. The CPU vent is never covered for sure either.

I also noticed that before it reboots it freezes for some seconds and then it reboots!

Today the same thing happened while using it but I left it to go through the disk check that goes in just before XP loads because usually I press a key to skip it. It reported many errors like "First allocation unit is not valid" entry will be truncated. This was reported for many files. The problem is that it goes through it really fast and it didnt give me time to write all the stuff down and the file names that where mentioned.

Could it be some problem with the hdd ?

It could be the RAM error, run [link=http://www.memtest.org]Memory Test[/link] to check the errors...

This error stops the Svchost.exe process that loads services such as Workstation and Server. As a result, Winlogon.exe and other processes stop responding.

Cure: u have to install the latest service pack to solve this...
