Default HARD DISK NOT RECOGNIZED IN dEVICE MANAGER

Drive C and D using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system, hard drive not showing in device manager, but shows up is safe mode device manager.

Primary ide controller(dual fifo)in device manager says the device is either not present, not working properly or does not have all the drivers installed.I went into device manager and brought up properties on this device, and clicked on update driver,it said the best driver was already installed on this device????
I would appreciate any help on solving this problem Thanks new member---Delbert

check in your BIOS, if its not recognised there as well then you might need a BIOS update...... but be careful while doing that, failing in completing this process will make your motherboard useless.

If its recognised in BIOS, you might need to intialise your disk from disk management.

but checking in th BIOS for your HDD is a good idea

you don't need to initilise your drive in Win98 SE, and before you do a BIOS upgrade i would try a BIOS reset, btw are you using FAT or FAT32 (how big is your Win98 SE partition)

something else to try, boot safe mode, open device manager and remove all duplicate enteys (you will not be able to remove the dual fifo devices)

then reboot and your pc will redetect everything, now all should be ok.

another way to check your HDD in BIOS is to press <Pause / Break> straight after POST beep
then look for devices in the IDE section, <space bar> to continue

another thing, how many HDD's are you using

another thing that causes drives to use MS-DOS mode compatability is a command in config.sys or win.ini / system.ini

I tried out the suggestions to no avail,I am sending more information on my system.
    windows 98se
    disk drive--st34313a
    capacity--4.33GB
    speed----5400rpm
    Partitions:
    C: (FAT32) 3123 MB (561 MB free)
    D: (FAT32) 994 MB (376 MB free)
Total Size 4117 MB (937 MB free)

device manager states that drive C and D are using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system and it will reduce overall system performance.
this device is not working properly because the Primary IDE controller(dualfifo) has been dynamically disabled????????
I hope this information will help in solving this problem THANKS--Delbert

    first try this

right, locate the Tools\Mtsutil folder on the Win98 CD, right-click the file Noide.inf, and then select Install
this deletes the registry value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD\IOS\NOIDE
    then reboot

    then try this

oh one other thing, make a win98 boot disc, boot from this disc and at command prompt type
    C:
    path=C:/Windows;C:/Windows/Command
    fdisk /mbr
    sys a: c:

this replaces the Master Boot Record, because a corrupt MBR can cause a HDD to use DOS Compatability
then remove boot floppy and reboot, then all should be ok
