No, that would not do much. Do you have a router? Or does your PC connect directly to the broadband modem? There are basically 2 options. Either your broadband modem (which provides your broadband internet) is connected to a router, to which your PC is connected, OR there is no router and your PC is connected directly to the modem. Which of those setups do you have?

My computer connects directly to my phonesline urm modem i think that is? im not very good with all this internet stuff. Sorry!

Im guessing a need to just buy a modem and a network card/usb adaptor to plug into my laptop.

Also, my laptop has a switch on the front to do with wireless networking Im guessing. Do I still need a usb adaptor/network card even though this is there?

Its a Toshiba laptop if this helps.

Sorry for the confusion!

My Computer

is there writing on the item which connects to your computer ?

or does the phone cable connect directly to the back of your computer, if it does connect to your computer then PCWizard, Everest just download, install & run them and hopefully one of those will detect it if it is an internal PCI card

BTW: your laptop probably already has a NIC (network interface card)

an RJ45 socket looks like this

and you just connect a crossover cable from the laptop to router or ethernet swtich

Edit: what model toshiba is it ?

Donkey, you're going to confuse her more lol.

ditzyblonde, I don't think you need to buy anything for your laptop. Every laptop that's even somewhat recently made already has wireless and wired internet capability built into it.

Okay ... there are a couple ways to find out more about what you have. 1.) is there any way you could take a picture of what your internet hookups look like, and post them? Kind of like donkey did?

2.) Can you just look at the device that your PC connects to? Examine it closely and it is bound to have on it what brand and model it is. Then either post your findings here or do an internet seach by simply typing in the brand and model number. That will surely bring up some results from which you should be able to figure out whether that's a modem, a router, or something else...

Right now it sounds to me that you have only a modem, in which case the solution would be to get a wireless router. That would allow all the computers in the household to use the one internet connection that you have through the modem.

If your router is wireless, then your laptop should pick up the signal and you can enable your wireless connection in control panel and connect to it. If the router is not wireless, then you'll need to physically connect your router and laptop via an ethernet cable.

Thanks for your replys and help guys. In the end we got someone round who knows about computers and he was trying to sort it for nearly 6 hours with no luck. So in the end we got a new different router and it was sorted easily within an hour or so
