Default memory: either stick but not both? :(

Hi,
I've just upgraded my mums pc for her today, and i used two 256mb 2100 sticks of ram in it. However when i have both sticks in, it only registers as having 256 total ram, both in the POST and windows. If i put just one stick in (it doesn't matter which one) it reports correctly that there is only 256 in there. any ideas? Thanks

daveman

You might want to try the memory in each slot one at a time, as well as make sure you have firmly placed the sticks in the slot.

Off hand, there could be a problem if you're using two double-sided sticks (has memory chips on both sides) and there's a limitation on how many banks the motherboard supports, like if it only supports 2 banks, and you've got double-sided sticks, that's where the problem is.

Do you know what motherboard you have in that box?
