My Computer

Default Modem Drivers

I have an Intel ENF656-UHW-INPR modem which I have the WinXP drivers for, but cannot find the Linux drivers for it, and the distro's I've been using will not auto-detect them. (newest releases of Kanotix & Mepis)

Is there anyway I can use my WinXP drivers to help Linux detect the modem?
Thanks if anyone knows o.O

Your modem looks to be an internal SoftModem (is This the one?). And if it is, they are not supported.
Open up the hardware tool in the tray (assuming it's there) and see if you can find your modem in either the Modem or Unknown section. As i also have an internal modem not supprted, it should look something like This.
Good luck to you!

So you're saying that I cannot use my internal modem to connect? This does not make sense to me.

You can't use the modem if it's Software based.
The only way your going to be able to connect is with an internal Hardware modem or an external modem using USB/Serial or whatever.
But once you get a hardware based modem, it's piss easy to configure

Soft modems, often called "WinModems" are really sound cards, not modems at all. All of the digital stuff happens in software rather than hardware. Some soft modems are supported, but they frankly suck on any platform (Win, Lin, Mac...). Either get an internal modem with a Rockwell chipset, or a cheapy external serial modem. Any external modem with a serial interface will work very well for you (ones with a USB connection are often softmodems in disguise).
