My Computer

When you connected your modem in COM3, did windows detect the modem and install drivers for them?

i may be wrong, but, about 6 years ago to enable COM3, you had to enter the BIOS -> Integrated Peripherals and choose between COM1 & COM3

the COM ports share resources, COM1 & 3 are shared, COM2 & 4 are shared

Edit: if i remember correctly COM1 & 2 are available by default externally & COM3 & 4 are available internally by default, so to make COM3 available externally you want to replace COM1 with COM3 in the BIOS, well, thats how it did work, but, it may have changed
