My Computer

Default Nice Card...Bit Loud Though...

I got my XFX 6600GT (128MB AGP8x) today and it performs much better than my old card in Knight Online (pretty much the only game I play at the minute). However one thing annoys me...the noise, when I looked at the box I could see a lovely chrome (probably just coloured that way) cooler showing through a clear plastic cover..."Wonderful!" I thought, but once installed its very loud, my PC was virtually silent before, and now it sounds like Heathrow again
The card came with software but none of it can be used to control the fan speed, any ideas?
Matt

I'd remove the HSF on it if it was too loud and install a new one. I've seen a tutorial somewhere on installing quite a large one but can't find it.

yeah i may look into a new HSF, i did originally order an Arctic Cooling one but realised it was for PCI-e 6600 series cards and not AGP...well i'll search around for another one, i dont think i can control this fan speed either, its only a 2-pin fan otherwise i would have connected it to my gatewatch.
Any suggesstions on a decent (QUIET) cooler for an XFX 6600GT 128MB (AGP8x)

I'd say either the Vantec Iceberq 5 Premium VGA kit or the Silent copper Zalman either are a good choice but I'm leaning toward the Vantec as they tend to be quieter even when Zalman states 'silent' I've seen products they call silent that get as lound as 37d so that's not good. Check reviews though.

after reading reviews i think i will get the vantec one, the Zalman looks nice but it sticks over the side of the card and will interfer with the case i think, plus the vantec one has a nice blue light
I have searched around and round lots of stuff and people having the same questions as me, I have a different smaller silver cooler on the 6600GT rather than the one with the picture of the dog on it.
http://www.pcpop.com/pcpopimg/05/2/2...-165649557.jpg
Thats the cooler I have on it and the next link is a picture of what i thought the cooler would be.
http://www.yesky.com/imagesnew/hardware/1125/xfx/2.jpg
But it looks like i'm going to get the vantec cooler, I realise why i cant have an Arctic Cooler (and why they dont make them) the PCI-e to AGP bridge is the part with a Heatsink on it and the arctic cooling coolers cant fit over this so they dont make one for the 6600GT agp...damn, well the vantec one looks nice and i have read good reviews about it, and its not too expensive on ocuk, although i will search around for a cheaper one.

Well i think i'm going to order the Vantec Iceberq 5, i hear the Zalman ones are big and can still be noisy even though they are meant to be silent.

My Computer

Just ordered the Vantec Iceberq 5 Kit, from trusty www.overclockers.co.uk
Ordered it on next day delivery (should be here Friday, it's the next day after the order is recieved before like mid-day or something) as the noise is annoying...
Hopefully this shall make temps drop (with a little help from Mr AS5) and keep things quiet again...

My Computer

got the cooler today, would have it fitted but one of the metal standoffs they gave me doesn't have a thread on it so i can't screw it into the cooler, I pushed it in but it just falls out and wouldn't hold the cooler in place...I have contacted overclockers and they said take it up with Vantec as it's a machining error and it's their fault (because it was like that sealed) so I am currently awaiting a reply from Vantec...
They should replace it for free though right? As in no way is it my fault...I was going to stick it on using some Arrodite (i think that's what it's called, my dad uses it, its industrial strength glue) but thought I'd better not as if there's any problems in the future then they can blame them on me...

lol you're right pelvis_3...i've tried that, the motherboard spacers just aren't long enough...
There's nothing I could have done (overclockers either, they told me to take it up with the company directly as its a manufacturing fault...)

yeah, it shouldn't be a problem though, I have all the plastic packaging etc, although its cut up from where i had to cut it open (it was that anoying sealed stuff that you have to use scissors on)
If they need the whole thing back then they can have it, i just want to get it sorted ASAP
