Default Please help, trying to recover data from a NAS Box

My WD Netcenter lost it's shared folder after a power outage last week. After doing some research I created a Linux boot cd (Knoppix), removed the 500 GB WD Caviar RE2 that was in the Netcenter, and plugging it directly into one of my computers using the SATA connector. Unfortunately the BIOS never recognized the hard drive. Because the HD has both the SATA power connector and a regular 4 pin power connector, I suspect that there are special power considerations I'm not taking into account.

When the drive is in the NAS box, it appears to still work (just no shared folder), but I don't want to do anything with it until I make an attempt at recovering the old data.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Thanks for your help.

My Computer

Welcome to hardwareforums Glint

Are you plugging in one or both of the power connectors? you should only be plugging in one!

What do you mean by "it appears to still work", what is it that makes you think it is working? (the drives makes a noise, you can ping the NAS etc)

Thanks for your reply. After more testing, I no longer think the drive is functional at all. It won’t post when installed directly in my system, and when installed in the WD Netcenter enclosure the Netcenter software tells me that there is no volume defined, and when I try to define a volume it says “not enough disk space to create a new volume”. At this point I’m pretty sure I’m hosed.
