okay i decided to build my own pc and bought some bits and pieces from ebay, heres what i bought.. Intel Pentium 4 D 930 (Dual core) LGA775, 3Ghz , 4mb 2 x 2Mb Cache, 800Mhz FSB. ECS 649-M3 Motherboard (Micro atx) gainward 7800gtx graphics card 1gb ddr2 memory 400watt psu I built this machine up and it had no life in it at all apart from a funny noise that comes from the psu when i start it up (no fans or nothing at all) like it just trips out. i figured this could be a memory or board problem so i went out and bought and new motherboard which is a ... Asrock 775Dual-VSTA so i rebuilt the machine and the same thing happens so i put in 1gb ddr memory from my current machine as this board can run either memory and still no joy the funny thing is if i dont attach the 12v four pin onto the motherboard and just run it with the 20 pin attached then the board comes alive and the fans run but i dont get anything on screen and there are no beeps, i have tried a friends 550watt psu to see if that was the problem but the same thing happens. so now i'm left with the conclusion that maybe my processor is fried unless i'm doing something completely wrong here which i need you guys expertise on so please help me (i knew i should have stuck with AMD) (ive also tried building it outide of machine with only the 550watt psu and still the same problem)
It could be memory, cpu or gpu, if possible i would try these components in a different machine. Or if possible try older spare components if you have any. It would be easier to diagnose a problem if infomartion on the motherboard was available, but i cant seem to find anything on the Motherboard, whats the manufacturer of the motherboard?
hi, the memory and gpu work fine in a friends machne, the motherboard is now an Asrock 775Dual-VSTA bought from here eBay.co.uk: Intel Socket 775 Motherboard Brand New FREE P&P (item 230068304876 end time 20-Dec-06 20:30:00 GMT) which was brand new and it still does the same thing as the other motherboard i had.
try a BIOS reset on thne original mobo - aways worth a try (with an ebay purchase) - as someone could have bought it and misconfigured the BIOS, which could be why they sold it on ebay[ot]just a possibility[/ot]
ive already tried this with both mobos, ive had a bit of a breakthrough though coz ive just built it outside the case again (with old mobo) and the thing powered straight up and went to bios so i turned it off and on about 6 times and it started up every time, then i pulled it apart and put it back in the case and NOTHING grrr so ive built it back outside again and still nothing (the fans move for about a second then off) so now i know its not the cpu coz the bios picked it up correctly
The last time someone posted on HWF with a problem like this was solved when it was found that they hadnt used the little spacers that go between the motherboard and case. The solder on the back of the board must have been touching the case and so they had a problem. If you aren't already doing so I would disconnect all unnecessary hardware. You should get a "pass post" beep with just the motherboard, ram , cpu and psu. Are there any wires (like the hdd led, power led etc) that you are connecting when you put the rig in the case? How about the PSU? Was that outsde the case when you got it working and itside when it didnt work? There must be something different when you put it back in the case.
everything was outside the case and it worked but now i have it all outside the case again and it doesnt, im really confused, i dont wanna take it to a shop coz the ones round here are complete rip off's.
Hi, It sounds like what Zeus was talking about with the spacers. If everything was working outside the case, and then you put it in and it stopped working, there could be a short circuit happening. If the mother board is sitting on the metal case and making contact, it could be causing a short. Do you have all the spacers in the case? They are little and cylinder shaped and screw into the case that so the mother board can sit on them and not make contact with the case.
I dont have those spacers in my case, i had some but i dident bother using them and i have had no problems, seems like now alot of motherboards have something allready on them.
when you built this pc did you put everything in it completely first time??? When building it is advisable to connect only the ram cpu and motherboard then turn it on and see if it the beep or light checks pass... If you havent done this i think you ought to ... the light or beep test will be able to tell you if theres a problem with your hardware although it sounds to me like you have a dodgy psu...
When i did it, i just slung it all on, and away i go, obviously i took care when placing components, and i put the PSU in first. My first build, i got everyhting working, turned computer on, then it turned off straight away , motherboard was faulty, i fallen out with DFI after that..
I have exactly the same problem. CPU fan starts spinning with only 24pins psu cable attached and nothing further happens. No beeps, no vga. With the extra 12pins psuadapter attached, the fan spins for 2 seconds and everything stops. Only things attached are psu, cpu (6300 duocore), agp 9600pro ati, 512 mb kingston ddr 333.
well ive bought a new 3.2ghz cpu that should arrive tomorrow so i'll sling that in and see what happens coz ive changed everything but the cpu so i'm gonna be ripping my hair out if it does not work, fingers crossed (if it is the cpu all i need to do is buy yet another one and ive got two full systems coz i've bought that many bloody parts
That points more towards ur PSU. See if you can get someones PSU to check ur computer or ur PSU to check in someones computer..... [ot]Please dont mind but i think you should start a new thread coz it disrupts the replies of thread starter.[/ot]
# Check the power cord and outlet. # Check the power supply's connector to the motherboard. Disconnect and reconnect to be sure its firmly connected. # Check the power switch on the PC's case and make sure it's properly connected to the motherboard. Try shorting the jumper pins that the switch uses to power on the PC. If that works, the switch is bad.
well its exactly the same problem as mine but ive tried 3 different psu's including a thermaltake 650watt supply that i just bought new, but yeah you should definatly go down that route first, my biggest problem is that all the shops round my way dont test dual core cpu's coz they have not got a test bench for it which is bloody annoying. I see a lucrative niche in the market here
Have u tried all my suggestions up there? If yes then continue with these... * Make sure all of the cards, the CPU, and the RAM, are properly seated. Remove them and reinsert them to be sure. * Remove all non-essential components and disconnect non-essential cables (including IDE, floppy, etc.). All you should need to reach the initial boot screen (memory count, etc.) are: the motherboard, CPU, RAM, power supply, and graphics card. If it boots, start adding components one at a time, and boot up each time. When the system won't boot, you've found your faulty (or incorrectly installed or incompatible) component.
i have the thing built outside the case with only motherboard, cpu and ram. and also with different psu, motherboard and ram but same cpu coz i only have 1 i have also tried various apg and pci-e video cards and hard drives just to see if for some strange reason it needed these attached the board has only fired up once a few days ago and went to the bios showing the correct amound of memory and dual cores but has never come on again which is the weirdest part coz if it had never come on at all i would be alot happier if you know what i mean
Then try this...ATX reset. Remove the power cable from the Case... Press n hold the power button for 30secs, put the power cable back in and start ur computer....
okay ive just tried it and nothing, its still dead as a doornail. ahhhhhhhhh why wont it work ive had this thing for 2 months now and cant use my 7800gtx without it:x: i just wanna play farcry in super high quality:doh:
