Blueray and AACS - Doom9's Forum

Looks as though we'll get a chance to see what BD+ is going to be capable of and how badly the studios will mess up everyone's players when they start modifying the software in the players.

This was always going to happen with software players.

Yeah but the scary thing with BD+ now is that they essentially have a rootkit in every Bluray player that they can modify the system however they want which given Sony's history is a very scary thought.

I wouldn't say I'm super negative about them, after all I have a Sony Ruby projector, PS3 and BDP-S1 BR player. I just don't like quite a few things they're doing lately.

With the cd rootkit fiasco they left people open to attack considering they've implemented pretty much the same thing in the BD+ spec I don't really want to be sitting on $3000 worth of paperweights when I've bought every movie I own legally, and they have the power to kill my players because someone has cracked their scheme thereby treating me like a criminal.

The other thing I'm kind of pissed with Sony about is their arrogance, when they put out their first batch of BR titles and had horrible prints like what is on The Fifth Element and then have an executive do interviews saying it's the consumers fault for either not having a high enough quality display or their tv isn't calibrated properly just shows they don't really care all that much about their customers.

If you look at my DVD collection link though you'll see I've supported and continue to support Sony quite a bit, it's just a few business practices I don't like.

Why do businesses waste so much money restricting all there PAYING customers, when they could be spending that money making the technology better??? (or wasting less money so the price can be dropped to encourage sales without losing a penny of revenue!).

You cant stop a pirate, no matter what you do... you will always be able to record the output to speakers (even if you have to replace the speaker with a audio jack), and record whats on your TV with a video camera. and it only needs one person to do it and publish it on a P2P network for the whole world to be able to download it!

It's a lost cause... so why even bother trying?

Read my mind Kenshin. Me and some friends were contemplating the possibility that Syngod worked for Microsoft's PR department or something. ;)

But that defeats the object of High Definition doesn't it.

Then get it on DVD instead, I'm sure many titles will come in the older format for a few years.

    I think that was HD-DVD.

It is a challenge for crackers to crack new game consoles and media discs. So no protection would stop them. Protecting media discs would only result in a higher price for movies and games.

I wish, would probably pay a lot better :).

Seriously though I am a Sony IT authorized reseller and sell quite a few VAIOs and get along fine with my reps. It's just the PS & media sides that basically seem to feel as though they can do no wrong & be able to do anything they want.

If Sony would've stayed with AACS where I wouldn't have to be worried about any studio that feels like it being able to modify the software on my BR players a big part of my issue with them would be gone. But now that titles are cracked I have to worry if I just spent $3000 on paperweights when they decide to use countermeasures.

To be honest I'm not too happy with MS right now either as my launch 360's dvd drive will now only read DVD's and Xbox 1 games but not 360 titles. I bought a new one just before they announced free repairs on the launch systems and now this new one was bricked in Nov. when they did their update.

So with my 360 experience and it being bricked by a software update by a company that deals with software you'll have to excuse my hesitation with a movie studio or hardware company being able to do the same thing on a whim just as an excuse to protect their property which I have no intentions of stealing.

Well first i would like to say that Sony did make mini discs which are sweet, way better than cd's for sure, i hate cd's. Kinda their own fault that that didn't work out though. Secondly HA HA HA HA, if was am correct here, one other reason they made blu-ray was copy protection right, lol, kinda funny how that worked out.
