Ok, I finally decided to upgrade from my ancient pentium D 805 and get a Q8400 Quad core. I have been reading how hot they get and how hard it is to cool them and overclock them with good temps w/o water. After getting a new case (NZXT Lexa S) and the new cpu properly mounted on my motherboard (Gigabyte EP45-UD3P) I fired her up and was reading around 22-23c Idle . Even when putting a load or prime 95ing it only got about 42c MAX. Currently as a heatsink, I am using a zalman cnp9500 with AS5 and it works pretty well but it never ran my D 805 this low. I am using about 1.3 volts on the cpu and dont even have the fan at full power. I even have it O/Ced at 3.7Ghz and am currently at 21c. Is it possible I got lucky and got a really good chip that runs really cool or could it be a bad sensor in the chip or w/e. I just really hope its not burning up at about 70 when it says 21c. My motherboard has never had a problem with temps and says the temps both under bios and program.

What program are you using to check temps? Try the BIOS, and also Coretemp and see if idle temps are about the same. The cooler you have is pretty good too. AS5 is also good thermal grease. What is the temperature in the room you are in? Its winter over in the USA so I'm guessing its a fair bit colder than usual. Some chips do run a bit cooler than others too.

Well, when checking the temps in my bios, it is always around the 20s and also the program that came with my motherboard (easy tune 6) also stays in the 20s idle (currently says 23) Now checking the temps with both with coretemp and realtemp say my cores are: 27, 33,31, 39
which isnt near 23. And when Running Intelburntest v2, I only max out at about 62-63c in Real Temp or coretemp. Im pretty sure my motherboard is accuraute with tempritures because it was fine with my pentium D805 which idled around 40 and max at about 62. It might also be because of the new case I put my motherboard in because the heatsink is next to a 120mm and a 140mm fan above it. My room temp is around 65 F almost all day. I really hope Im lucky and have a really cool running and overclockable processor because its current idle temps are overclocked @ 3.7ghz  (2.66 stock)

Since you have fairly good airflow in your case as well as good CPU cooling and the room you are in is cool then max temp of 63C sound about right. Idle temps sound about right too, although the BIOS idle temps are maybe a little cooler than usual. Should be fine!
