    Hi all,
Have IBM Thinkpad with XP pro spanish.
The laptop was dropped and would not start at all - just a flashing black cursor.
I ramn CHKDSK and it found and repaired many errors.
After chkdsk, the laptop started ok, but then failed after a few seconds with blue screen.

I do not have the original cd. So used a downloaded copy to do a repair install.
The repair install was running ok, but then asked for a product key.
I used the legal product key from the sticker on the laptop, but it reported that is was incorrect.
I am guessing that I was using a retail version on an oem machine (or vica versa).
I entered the product key that was supplied with the download and it has worked.
The laptop is up an running, an all my progs and data have been recovered.

BUT - now I am getting a failed genuine xp warning (because i used the the dodgy serial that came with the download).

I have tried to reactivate and change the product id, but it will not accept it.

Is there any way around this? Or do I need to get hold of another disk and do the repair installation again?.
How do I know if a copy of xp is retails or oem (or the correct version for an IBM thinkpad)

    many thanks for any advice

To install Windows using the product key that is attached to your computer, you'll need the OEM version of Windows XP. The retail version won't accept OEM keys.

    Thanks.
I think I am using OEM version. Maybe I need the retail version!
But can't find a download for it.

I have read that I can edit the setupp.ini file and re-burn the image.
But I cannot find out what PID I would use to make the image appear as the correct version for this laptop.

    Any ideas

    Hello friend,

Just try this to activate your windows XP.......

    1) Start the PC into Safe mode :-

Power on the PC and press F8 right before Windows begins to load. Select "Safe mode"

    2) Run "Rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk" from the "Run" box :-

Now click on ' Windows Key + R' and in the "Run" box type

"Rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk". Press Enter. This will re- set activation .

if it does not work, inform me with "error report"
