Hello,
My problem is spanned over 2 drives, 6.4gB and 1.1gB. 6.4 was my C: at the time and the 1.1 my backup D:. Now I was running Win98SE and while checking the properties of D: after recently formatting C: I noticed that I had the option to decompress (or rather, have more space on the drive) which I choose to do, and I got it, I don't remember the exact figure I got but it was around 500mB extra. So time passes, and somehow I obtain a virus on C:, so since not having a writer at my disposal to backup I drop everything irreplacable on D: and format C: once I realize that is my only option. Now since having formatted I realized there was the 'decompression' that I did in Windows which was not reversed, and I only understood this once I tried to access the D: and C: at the same time, which I could not do. I am only able to see one at a time, and I am unable to get access to view/remove the files on D:. Can anyone explain how I might be able to reverse this situation and salvage the drives. Pardon me if I didn't explain this well enough, it's been some time since the actual event described above happened. |

what you are saying is you compressed the files in the D drive using Win98SE using Drive Space? if so I think you will need to install WIn98SE again on the C drive and uncompress the files before you can use the drive!
I've not used 98 for years so sorry if it does not help you in anyway!

In fact, even in my bios, it couldn't properly recognize the true size of C: after that format. It might have something to do with a bad partition, however I know very litte on use with partition magic and other ultilities of that nature so perhaps someone can help with that respect. I would not use partition magic, if you have a windows 98 or windows 98SE cd then put it into your cdrom drive and reboot your pc, your computer should boot off the windows 98 cd you have just put in your drive.
You will get a few options something like: "Setup Windows 98" - Don't Choose This "Start With Cdrom Support" "Start with no Cdrom Support" Choose the CDROM Support option, now once u get to the command line ie when it shows: "A:\" type this: "cd E:\Win98" now hit enter, the bit that said "A:\" should now read: "E:\Win98" now type this: "fdisk" hit enter First screen that appears, press "Y" for yes and you are provided with a set of options on screen, goto the "delete option".. and delete your "C Drive" partition, now once u have completed that. Reboot, and do the same thing upto the point where you are in "FDISK utility" again.. now use the "create new partition" option.. and create a new C drive.. Now reboot goto the "E:\Win98" prompt as i have explained above, and type: "Format C:\ /s" when asked "you will loose all data e.t.c e.t.c" press "Y" for yes, and start formatting.. once the format is complete give the drive a name or leave it blank, and reboot.. now on the option screen again.. Choose "Setup Windows 98" or whatever.. now reinstall windows 98 You should still have your D drive once windows is reinstalled

I formatted C:, reinstalled Win98SE, and C: now seems to be fine.
However, with D: attached, it's a FAT type drive with no data, and cannot be convertered using Drive Converter, as it doesn't show up on the select screen. Not to mention, but Scandisk when activated reads "..cannot check this drive because the disk is not properly formatted or a program such as disk utility has locked it Format the drive or wait for the utility to finish then restart scandisk." Any other ideas as to getting this drive readable again without formatting since I only need to read it to backup the data on it. Note: I didn't have D: attached when reinstalling Windows. Only after. |
