Default PS2 Broken?

i got a ps2 from a friend because he said it was broken. i opened it up and the put in a disk and it spun for a second and thats it. so i swapped the laser with a new one. the same thing happens with the new one exept the new laser flashes red for a second and moves up and down (so i think it is working). any ideas on what i should do next?

Try adjusting the height of the laser and/or replaceing the motor.
