Question PS2 Game?

I just got a ps2, bit behind the trend with the ps3 coming out but still a great system to have I think. Im looking for some good games to get to start a collection. I am looking for a good racing game, fighting game, RPG and a good FPS game. Any suggestions?

Racing Games;

Need for Speed Most Wanted is the latest installment for the NFS series. A nice game, targeted for those "The Fast and The Furious" fans.

If you're more into the serious racing games you should definetly go for Gran Turismo 4, which lasts really long since there's literally hundreds of cars and loads of racing modes available.

Fighting Games;

The Tekken series are really good fighting games, more hand to hand combat instead of swords and other weaponry.

Virtua Figter games are also very nice, although they are more difficult to master than Tekken games since the buttoncombinations for various moves in Virtua Fighter are harder to do.

Sould Calibur is pretty cool if you're looking for a fighting game with weaponry. And if you're into more violence than you could always have a look at the Mortal Kombat series.

RPG's

Final Fantasy games are good, at the moment you have only 2 available for PS2 (Europe) FF X and FF X-2 (stay away from the last one unless you like girlie stuff and dressing up ;D) The up and coming FF XII for the PS2 seems to be a really great game from what I've seen of it so far. You could always try out the older installments of ther FF series since the PS2's backwards compatible with those, although the graphics are outdated some parts have storylines that exceed the PS2 versions.

Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 are really nice RPG's with great storyline, but might look too childish since there's the whole Disney cast running around in there.

Dragon Quest and Tales of Symphonia are also really nice. They're both Cel shaded games like Zelda the Wind Waker for the Gamecube, which you'll either hate or love.

1st person shooters;

If you've been spoiled by FPS games on the PC you'll have a hard time getting used to the controls and the lesser quality of graphics of 1st person shooters on a console, but rhere are some;

Killzone is a cool futuristic themed shooter with good graphisc and storyline, it (as mentioned before) takes a while to get used to, since it'll look a lot less fast paced than other shooters.

Timesplitters 1,2 and 3 (Future Perfect) are a lot more fluid than Killzone, and offer a nice storyline but their strong part is the amount of extra gameplay modes they offer. Not so serious as Killzone since it involves monkeys and walking trees and other weird charaters to play as.

Maybe other HWF users have more suggestions, I hope this helps you a little. Most of the games I suggested aren't that expensive anymore nowadays.

Greetings,

Marcus

I think you're right on with the RPG's and Fighters, though I'd also suggest the Moral Kombat series as an other option as the newer ones incorperate weapon and hand to hand combat seemlessly.
I think Killzone isn't too hot, I'd really avoid it. The story didn't really grab me, the weapons were okay but all felt pretty similar to me. It provided pretty standard shooter action which would have been fine but it was a hugely buggy mess. Freeze ups, clipping galore, problematic rag dolls, and characters getting stuck in they're low res distance skins (so even up close they looked like they were from a 1997 game).
Anyway you might want to check out God of War, Burnout Revenge, Black, and Resident Evil 4 aswell.

Funny enough I got a few of the games you mentioned...

Kindom Hearts - Brill game, cant stop playing it
Burnout Revenge - Havnt really got anytime to play this one due to always being on kindom hearts.

Ive got need for speed most wanted for my pc so i think i will give that one a miss, great game though. Played a bit of time spliters a while ago on a friends ps2 and really enjoyed it and that will be one of my next buys.

I was looking at getting black, i really like my fps's, esp F.E.A.R. What is the storyline behind Black?

Yeah, I totally forgot Resident Evil 4 falls into fps games nowadays. It's not really 3rd person but neither 1st person, so would you call this 2nd person view then?

Anyway, Resident Evil 4 plays like any other first person shooter and you should definetly get this if you're into horror / thriller games, which I think you do since you've stated you really like F.E.A.R. too.

I'd also recomment some of the game Exfoliate mentiond, like God of War for instance but since you posted you we're looking for a good racing games, fighting games, RPG's and good FPS games I left them out.

Sorry dude, my bad, must have glazed over it when I just read Soul Calibar.
Oh and I can't say I've actually played Black, just heard (and read) it was a very impressive and fun FPS. Best destructiblity of pretty much any console game out there from the sound of it. As for the story all I know is it has something to do with the Black Ops and the focus is not on story telling, but more basic ties between each mission. Hit up www.gamespot.com for more info.

Sounds good, I think Black is going to be my next buy. Read a review on it the other night and it says the same as you, exfoliate, you can basicly destroy anything and everything in sight. thanks for the help

Black 7.4

Quote:
Black's first few levels are exciting, but the action movie formula wears thin fast, and the game's over not long after.
The Good: Really sharp audiovisual presentation; makes a great first impression; lots of glass to break.
The Bad: Not much reason to play through it more than once; gameplay feels stuck in a rut; disappointing story; often-idiotic artificial intelligence
Resident Evil 4 9.3

Quote:
Originally released for the GameCube, Resident Evil 4 makes few sacrifices in bringing all its gory glory to bear on the PlayStation 2 and delivers one incredible thrill after another.
The Good: Incredibly amazing audiovisual presentation; excellent, bloody, in-your-face shooting action; suspenseful, lengthy storyline keeps you guessing; astonishing boss battles; plenty of extras give lots of replay value--separate ways side story exclusive to ps2.
The Bad: Some uncharacteristically goofy dialogue; a couple of minor graphical blemishes.
Not trying too change your mind though, just adding some more info on the "suggestions"

;D

Happy to help zimcerullo. And I do realize RE4 got much higher marks and is generally regarded as a "better game" but I always like to judge things on their own merits. Black isn't very similar to RE4, Black is a full blown FPS with devotion to gunplay and attention to any detail involving guns and firefights. RE4 is more adventure based, and goes for a story driven and atmospheric approach, no so much run and gun from what I gather. Either way I think you'll like both. But due to Black's short lengh look for it on sale at least.

black is crappy, not worth it i have it and it does support 1080i so its pretty but not so much everthing esle, its fun to blow stuff up everyonce in awhile but i've only gotten to the third level and it got boring, RE4 is ridicoulous, beat it like 4 times over definetly worth it.

Cool dude, how does RE4 look on PS2, I heard it was kind of lessened in graphical quality for the PS2 in the transition from it's GameCube roots.
