Default Which RAID Controller?

Evening...

I heard that if you use a RAID controller card (as apposed to the motherboard version) you can increase the performance.

If this is true which ones do you recommend? Im looking for around at least 250 - 350mb/sec throuput as im going for 2x WD Velociraptor's 300GB, they run at 100mb/sec each average read

FYI: I have a free PCI and PCI-E x16 (2.0 and 1.0) available

Thanks for advnce

Hardware RAID cards by Areca or LSI are good performers. Adaptec can be good as well, but they tend to be a little pricier for the performance, which might be due to the brand recognition.

Thanks for response. I looked for Areca and LSI and their prices range are pretty high (cheapest around $350), the Adaptec ones are even worse, like you say.

Probably a stupid question but what kind of performance gain is expected and is it worth it?

Thanks man!
