I'm already on a fibre optic network, and every country has diffrent laws that control access to the internet. If the US phone companies want to control the internet in the US, then they will get left behind by Europe and Asia.

This is going to sound a little "out there", but pickup some history books if you feel it's far-fetched.
To an extent, what you're saying has already happened. We have horrible network connections, and even in datacenters, bandwidth is somewhat expensive here. Homes in Japan for instance, have a much better connection on average than we do here in the US. But, don't forget that the standards bodies which govern the Internet as it now stands are American. This country is run almost completely by corporations, which historically has been first steps into fascism in other countries throughout history. In a fascist dictatorship, it is very bad when people can spread and create information on their own, since they won't often like or agree with those in power. In a dictatorship, it is crucial that the people are fed only the information which shows their rulers in a positive light. This is the purpose of the "Great Firewall of China", the content filters which block Chinese Citizens from accessing information which is critical of their government.

Those of you who live in western countries who are thinking "that can't happen here", think again. You are already reading and seeing propaganda at every turn which shows the government, the police, and the military in a positive light. If you're in Europe, you're already part of the EU, and your nations have already given up much of their sovereignty. Furthermore, if you live in England, you are inhabiting the most surveilled nation in the world. In America, our government and big telecoms have been proven to have been participating in illegal domestic wiretapping since after September 11, 2001. This means US citizens were spied on, by their own government, without a warrant; a direct violation of their constitutional rights. When a government no longer obeys the rule of law and are no longer held accountable for their actions, it is becoming or has already become a dictatorship. In such a system, citizens are treated with disdain and suspicion by their own governments, much like a warden might think of prisoners in a penitentiary. A free internet is hostile to fascism and therefore will be squelched by western governments. It's only a matter of time, if we don't stand up and fight for network neutrality, before independent content is completely relegated to low bandwidth "internet ghettos" -- then disappears altogether.
