Realtek Onboard Audio problems...

I recently refurbished my old eMachines t5026 with a new HD and a new copy of XP. This particular unit comes with onboard Realtek sound, but since my installation of XP on the new HD I've gotten no sound what so ever. I have the audio enabled in my BIOS (no sound) and then installed the newest realtek drivers from the eMachines website but still can't get any sound.

Unfortunatley my only 2 PCI slots are being used by video and network cards so an expansion sound card is out of the picture.

Also in my device manager I've got these Legacy sound and video drivers (windows installed these?) which are not using any device (box is greyed out too). Along with these are Audio and Video codecs, I don't know what any of these really do and can't uninstall them either.

I feel like one of these drivers is connected to the hardware and not the realtek drivers that I need. But I really don't have a clue and shouldn't I have gotten at least some sound even without any drivers? Could the sound portion on the mobo have gone bad?

Any help you guys could throw my way I'd appreciate it.

An expantion sound device is not quite out the picture, I am sure you can get USB Speakers/Headsets or even USB Multichannel sound cards

Hey, thanks for the reply. I might want to look into external sound options later on down the road for better quality. Especially if I decide to upgrade the speaker setup with something that's got more juice.

As it turns out, and it's hard to admit this since it's rather foolish, but the pc to audio cord I was using wasn't right for the TV I had it hooked up too (ie plugged into the wrong channel). So long story short, I've had audio the whole time.

So I used this:

R(in)___________
W(in)__________}---------(out)--=

instead of what I needed:

=--(in)------------------------(out)--=
