    Default Recommended PSU Watts for 8800

    Gd evening, I recently submitted a post on HWF about my PC "stop screen"ing itself when running movies from my usb drive, well now (for no apparent reason) im having my pc reset itself occasionally when in games.

    I was hunting around HWF and came across this post: (not too important). In it he stated its recommended to have a 600w+ PSU for 8800 gpus, do you think that having a 600w+ psu will solve the resetting problems (and maybe the stop screens?)

    thanks for reading, hope you can help.

    I'm no psu expert but I remember deciding upon my OCZ 600w as a minimum for my BFG 8800gts, would have gone higher if i could have afforded it at the time - get the best you can

    Well, wattage doesn't necessarily mean it all. It's if the wattage you need is available in the voltage your system needs. A 600W power supply is probably good, but that assumes that it has enough grunt on the +12V rail.

    You determine wattage by multiplying the voltage and the amperage.

    (V) x (I) = (W)
    V=volts
    I=amperage
    W=watts

    12V x 30A= 360W, for example.

    I believe you're looking at at least 25-30A on the +12V rail, or via combination if using multiple +12V rails. This value makes allowances for the rest of the system, so it's not just exclusively for the video card.

    Most decent PSU's with multiple +12V rails offer at least 2 18A rails. You'll also see what total +12V amperage you get when the rails are combined. Due to RMS values, you're not going to quite get 36A off two 18A +12V rails, but the closer to that the better.

    If you don't expect to get into SLI, I'd look at a Corsair 620HX or 650TX, which are quality PSUs.

    Any decent brand of power supply's 600W should do the job just fine.

    Antec
    Enermax
    Silverstone
    Corsair
    Thermaltake (Toughpower, specifically)
    Seasonic
    OCZ
    FSP/Fortron

    Which PSU you will need will also be determined by which GPU you get. Also which revision. The new 8800GT models take QUITE a bit less power than the old 8800GT models. By quite I mean they consume almost as little power as an 8600GT (A card that draws ALL of its power from the PCI-E slot, no additional connector is needed and it uses VERY little power.) So let us know which GPU it is you've got and if it's a G92 core or not.
