I am looking into getting a LCD to replace my CRT. I like to do a lot of gaming (playing FarCry right now). The Samsung 17" 710N-2 seems like a good deal for $300 at Buy.com and I have heard nothing but good things about it. Is there anything better for the price?

Well, to be honest if you're buying an LCD/TFT for gaming, you're really barking up the wrong tree. LCDs have a much lower refresh rate than your typical CRT monitor, which actually limits your potential FPS in games. They also have a higher dot pitch, which makes individual pixels more evident and can be distracting. Not only that, "ghosting", or image bleed-over, is very common in LCDs, so your games will likely appear blurry in fast-paced scenes. As a matter of fact, a good solid CRT (which can be had for about $200) is superior to an LCD in just about every conceivable way for gaming.
If have already made up your mind that you want an LCD, Samsung makes great stuff. They're one of the few companies promising zero blown pixes (yes, LCDs commonly blow out pixels).

Anti-Trend is 100% right about your situation of "Which monitor will game better" as CRT monitors are better, however I use a 19" Philips LCD, and i regularly play:
Doom 3 Far Cry Call of Duty Battlefield 1942 Battlefield Vietnam HL2 / CS:S All first person shooters, and i don't have a problem of ghosting or pixel distraction, and my FPS is the same as using a CRT. The one thing you have to make sure of, is when buying a LCD to game on, make sure it has a refresh rate of either 16MS or 8MS, (the lower the better - MS = MilliSeconds), also make sure that your LCD your choosing is capable of atleast 70/75Hz at high resolutions (ie: above 1024x768 - ideally atleast 1280x864). As i said, I have no problem with ghosting, brightness, contrast or pixel distraction, and you do notice the difference - but not in a negative way, I've used LCD's now for about a 1 1/2 years and I find it very hard to use CRT's now.

Probably because of the space saving or overall look-good factor. I like LCDs but sometimes they're very blurry with the crap ones.
