Default Sata - ide to usb converter?

Hello

I bought this piece of kit from ebay

USB 2.0 TO SATA IDE 2.5 3.5 INCH CABLE W/POWER ADAPTER on eBay, also, IDE, Cables Connectors, Computing (end time 28-Mar-08 18:16:59 GMT)

Unfortunately I cannot get it to work with either sata or ide drives - which I have several of.
The drives work fine when I put them into a external caddy so I know that they are not faulty.
The sata drives do not spin up. Samsung ide's do not spin up either but a Maxtor drive did but it could not be read. I could not see it in disk manager even though I tried different variations on the jumpers. In the safely remove icon next to the clock in Windows XP I did have the option to remove usb device but no drive letter. I cannot assign a drive letter because I cannot see it in disk management.

Is this item faulty or is there a way to rectify this?

The ebay seller told me to post on here as you guys are knowledgeable

Just checked the drive again and when I safely remove the device and plug it back in again it does not appear in the "safely remove device" option - any ideas?

I'd say yours is definately faulty, but I also think these products are kind of rubbishy which is unfortunate.

These things would come in great need day to day, but for some reason I've experinced nothing but problems from them- always connectivity issues and other people I've spoken to have the same kinds of issues with connectivity.

I cant seem to find anything of these types of devices that are actually reliable. I'm still waiting to find a company that builds this stuff to actually invest in a quality product.
