    Default Serving it up?

    hey

I have an idea i'm entertaining here but not sure how I'm going to set it up or if it's possible....

I have 2 computers I want to hook togeather in a mini-server kind of thing i guess. The internet we have is WiFi, so it can be picked up on the laptop I'm using as I speak. BUT, I have a really nice Win2000 gaming machine I just built from the ground up and want to get this wireless on. I realize that i SHOULD buy a wireless ethernet adapter to pop into the gamer and simply connect to the web like that, but I was wondering of i can do it this way: Hook the desktop up to the laptop and receive internet that from it. Seems buying a $5 cable and a bit of work is a better deal than $30 and no work
Seems like it could be done somehow XP to XP, but I'm not sure because one is XP and the other is 2000 there might be conflicts?

    Thanks.

what you need is a crossover cable to connect the two machines together and then setup internet connection sharing (it should work, but i have never needed to use it).

But first, have a look in some of the smaller computer shops, you will probably find they have a few usb wireless dongles lying around that you can buy off them cheaply (you will probably have to find the drivers yourself though, or ask here for help).

I wouldn't pay more than £5-10 for a usb wireless dongle ($10-20 USD).

hint: make sure it says 802.11G on it (if its says 802.11B its maximum speed is 11MBit instead of 54MBit)

what you want to do is called internet connection sharing or ICS. What will happen is if both pc's are using ICS they will effectively reduce the bandwith in half...buy a wireless pci card..they are only $15 usd
