Red face software loading

If I load software on to a PC that has a keygen serial number can that software physically damage the PC in anyway?

After I loaded some software on a pc and I opened up tmy usual web page and allsorts of adverts porn sites etc came flooding through. An IT expert diagnosed trogans embedded in the keygen software.

The keygen and the software were removed and the PC disinfected, but he told me that the PC was physically damaged.

I also downloaded some free MP3's off a new bands web site and the IT expert told me that these were always full of trogans.

All comments welcome

Well. did you scan the keygen and software after you downloaded it ? The software will not cause any damages,BUT the Viruses will... You have to scan everything you download..

My Computer

I would think that it is next to impossible for data (viruses, trojans ext..) to make any physical damages to your system. If somehow a virus would find a way to raise voltages for components on your motherboard it is possible to cause damage but even if it does that almost all motherboards shut down before the components have a chance to bake.

Maybe, and this is extremely unlikely, there is a way to kill hard drive clusters electronically and the trojan had instructed your computer to do so. Again though, I have not heard of anything like that ever happening or being tested out. Your best bet is to ask the IT expert about how in the **** it's possible to physically damage someone's computer with a virus.. cause I would very much like to know. Honestly, this is very valuable information.

If your computer behaves fine with a new windows install then it's probably fine. The only possible place the trojan could have caused damage is to your hard drive or BIOS, but this is extremely unlikely.

Unless it's screwing with a hardware's ROM BIOS somehow, no, a virus shouldn't be interfering with your hardware.
