Default Sound card problem, No sound!

Hiya guys,

Basically I had to totally re-install Windows and I have no drivers for anything really, except Intel ones.

The main problem is the audio/sound card driver, I have been to the Dell support page, downloaded the correct drivers for my soundcard but every time I run the installer it comes up with an error message saying:

Error: Setup is unable to find a supported product on your system. Please ensure that your product is properly installed before attempting to run this setup again.

This is one of those problems which drives you to the end of insanity and I'm so pissed off right now!

If anyone could send me in the right direction, else it's a pricey visit to PC World... again!

N.B: I have no Resource CD of any type, just to let you know.

Aha, The sound card has now appeared on the Device Manager list, but it seems to be a very old one.. very old. This maybe be because I installed an old version of the sound card driver yesterday. But I fail to see why this would have made any difference if it is a different model as surely the same error would pop up.

Now the icon has a (!) next to it on the Device manager window, and I have right clicked update driver all to now avail, even googled the name of the card on the device list. (Sound Blaster 16 or AWE32 or compatible (WDM)).

I dont think that I have got the different set of drivers then you have found on the net...
Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16/32/AWE Drivers - Free Software Downloads and Software Reviews - Download.com

But do it differently this time. Go to device manager, right click on the yellow ! sign, uninstall it. Restart your computer. Your computer will detect new hardware and will take you through a wizard...Go through that wizard and install respectively....

Also, Fregs method is worth a try...

If you're still having this problem, even though it's been a while, get a program called "Unknown Devices". It'll give you the exact model number. Also, I'm pretty sure the dell utilities actually extract all the files to a folder (C:\Cabs if I remember right), so you could try update drivers, locate manually, then browsing to the appropriate folder.
