..alternatively you could check through any documentation you got with your laptop or have a rummage around in device manager where you will also be able to install new drivers if necessary.
Your post is a little light on information. Is this a new problem on a previously functional laptop or a glitch with a brand new system? Sound cards are generally easy enough to troubleshoot. Doublke chk settings and chk your drivers but before doing anything drastic make sure your application is properly configured and that your recording/media isn't damaged.
