Default sound problem for F.E.A.R - need help!

ive been playing fear for a time now, but suddenly when i turned on my computer one day and opened fear, nothing, a black screen, i press control-alt-delete, and it sayd that fear is not responding.
this kept on happening. to diagnose this problem i went to fear config and check all the stuff there and the game ran. i then slowly unchecked them until the sound was left, so the problem was with the sound.
i just installed the latest driver (from creative- my card is the x-fi extrememusic) and the game worked fine and i was happy...for a week.
today i tried to play the game....same problem as before, what is wrong!!
help! please!

Did you grab the latest updates for it? If I remember, there was a patch available the day of it's release, but I didn't really read what it fixed. That's what I'd check out if you haven't already done so.

My Computer

Try turning down, or even off hardware sound acceleration.

Do this by going to start, run, type in dxdiag, click sound tab and should be near the bottom

My Computer

odd, I have ace mega codec pack installed as well under windows 2k pro. I play F.E.A.R. just fine with sound acceleration on.

With windowsxp installed, ace mega codec pack, and it didn't make a difference with hardware acceleration because I couldn't get F.E.A.R. to run no matter how hard I tried.
