Think I messed something up.

I was working on my uncles computer today. He wanted to upgrade the OS and RAM. I shut the computer down then pulled the ram chip out to see what kind I needed to purchase. I forgot to pull the power cable out of the back. After buying the RAM and installing it I noticed a board light was still powered up. Ohh noooo... now when I try to boot the computer I get the single beep alarm.

Did I fry the MB or are there things I can try to get past this problem.

I am not computer illiterate, but this is the first time I have ran into this problem.

It does seem like you've fried something. Its really not a good idea to install components with the power on. Try using the old RAM in the board to see if the boards been damaged.

I have already tried putting the old RAM back in the computer.

Yeah I know it isn't a good idea to change components with the power still on. Was a total blunder on my part for leaving the power chord in the case. I just didn't know if anyone knew of anything I might try.

are you sure the RAM is correctly inserted sometimes they need quite a push before they set correctly?!

u cud always reset the cmos and this might work make. post back if u dnt know how to do it and ill write u some instructions. hope this helps Dave

Actually if you did shut the computer down, unplugging the power cord is not that important. Of course, it's better to do it just in case.

To clear the CMOS:

1) Look in your manual, it will show you where the cmos jumper is on your motherboard.

2) Unplug the power cord, turn off your power supply (some have a switch), and tap your power button until nothing happens, this is to suck the juice that's left in the capacitators.

3) Change the jumper postiion from 1-2 to 2-3 or vice versa (in the clear position). Wait 10-15 seconds.

4) Reposition the jumper, plug your cord back etc. And your good to go.
