I'm running windows Xp on an abit Va20 motherboard that's got an onboard realtek sound chip

the system sounds have stopped working and it's doing my head in.

the sound device shows up in sounds as the default device, but the preview button is 'greyed' out and unavailable

It plays mp3, dvd etc through media player but it won't play any system sounds or flash animation sounds

    things which I've eliminated

it's the latest driver, dated august 2005
I've uninstalled the driver and restarted.
    I've checked all speaker connections
I've checked the bios and the sound chip is switched on and set to auto#
the audiorack diagnostics play all sounds
direct x diagnostics play all system sounds
I've Checked it's not on mute through media player, quicktime, & realtime

    and now I'm completely stuck

    can anyone help me please.....

    I've already switched it off

    then uninstalled the driver

    then restarted

    then switched it back on

I'm not sure if it could be a software setting, but I've run out of places to look

re-setting the bios involves changing a jumper on your motherboard for a few seconds then putting it back, you may need your motherboard manual to do this as you'll need to find the correct jumper, if not then you can remove the battery for a while, leave it overnight if you want to be safe then put it back in and see what happens
