I have a new 'Acme' computer with Windows XP.

Animated gifs do not work on it.
I have been to Advanced Internet options and ticked the box to make these work but to no avail. All settings are in default.
    Any ideas please.
Related to this I believe is another problem in which I cannot see images like this:

I have removed [ and this ] to show you, as I do not know what this type of image is called!

What program are you trying to view to .gif files in? Internet Explorer will allow you to see them properly

I could go into details about why IE is the most insecure browser in history and is typically the entry point for malware onto Windows PCs, but that's not the reason I recommended an alternate browser in this instance. By using a different browser, we can discover whether or not the problem is limited to IE or if it is system wide.

Point taken but if I do install one of them, can I uninstall it?
    And thanks again.

Yes you can uninstall either of them if you want to. However, once you start using Opera, i'm pretty sure you won't want to remove it :)

If you don't want to install an Internet Browser full stop, then may I recommend a simple image viewer. It's called Irfanview, and it's completely free of charge. It will allow you to view your moving GIF files, as you desire

Right - sorry for the delay.
Loaded Irfanview and Firefox and there is the same problem. No animated gifs - I can of course see the first part of the gif but no animation.

Would it be possible for you to post a link to an image which does not work for you?

Or please laod a gif image which does not open for you via the manage attachment facility in the 'additional options' section.

You will find it right under the 'reply to thread' which you will be writing you reply in.

    A gif.

Not a gif this time but a clickable image.

Where do I find 'the manage attachment facility in the 'additional options' section' as its not there on my machine?

but the recent gif you posted is not showing....

Yes I can see that using Firefox and Windows 2000. Can you see it moving?

This just doesn't make sense, and now I am completely out of ideas! Either you are doing something critically wrong, or your PC is just :swear:

How are you opening these GIF files? Are you double clicking on the file, and then trying to view it in the application that loads? You should try loading the GIF file within an application i.e Firefox File > Open File.

If that still doesn't work for you, I think your best bet would be to post on Microsoft's Technet.

And they were absolutely no help whatsoever - what does Gates pay them for?
Ah well - thank you all for your help.
