Are you running 64 bit or 32 bit ? how much ram do you have ? What OS are you running ? Vista or 7 ? You could try a sound card to bypass this problem..

What program are you using to open audio files (vlc, winamp, wmp...)? Are these mp3's? As ghostman said, how much ram do you have and what bit o/s are you running? In device manager, do you see anything with an exclamation mark? Does Windows update offer any new recommended updates for your drivers?

I have this problem with flash videos, mp3, wav. I use VLC, but it does the same thing with all the players. I have 4 gigs of RAM. I have Vista x64, but it does the same on Vista x32, and 7 x32 and x64. On XP i don't have this issue, but i can't use it, because it can't see all 4 gigs...........
