E3 came and went and provided us with a plethera of eye candy.

But the question still remains, in terms of graphics, platform, story line, audio, game play and general fan-boy hommage; Which game will come out on top this year.

We've already had Deus Ex 2 (DE2) come and go with only a quiet bang. Rather disapointing on all accounts. But at lease it's come out and has been made into a finished (playable) product.

Half Life 2 (HL2) had a whole host of videos at E3 (inc the CounterStrikeSource vid which looked very sexy indeed) and dose look to be a technically stunning game for the 5% of us with graphics cards that can render half a billion pollygons per mili second and still have processing power left over to acctualy think about a story line? It certainly looks sweet but with the (already) 1 year delay and potental further cock-ups to come, will it ever see the dim glow of our home monitors (TFT or otherwise)? And when it dose will Valve have overlooked the story line when perfectign the combine and stryder models?

I myself only bought an X-Box to play Halo on, havent bought any games since, I dont like that a company can buy its way into another market like microsoft did (they built a pc and slaped an AV-Out on it). Anyway, they did get it right in buying bungie (and they werent please due to their previous mac relations - see marathon). But bungie were developing halo, and they changed course to making it THE xb launch title, and it was all we expected and a can of MC-ownership. And the love that halo received has generated enough hype for Halo2 (H2) that you could run a small city off it. We've seen the play-through, the video of the MC jumping into space, the snap shots and the videos of Zanzibar. It faces the same 3-way crossing that HL2 dose, will they go too far with grfx and forget to inclue a good story line (1), work too hard on the story line and end up spoiling it all (2), or get the perfect balance Bungie are famed for?(3).

Doom 3 looks to be a bit of a dark horse so to speak with little (or no) new info in the past month.

What do you think? Which will you buy?

Plege your alegance now and collect your weapon at the door.

    Crim.

Actually, the games based on the newer Unreal engine just seem to suck. UT2k4 is actually pretty good, but Deus Ex: Invisible War has been mangled from being ported to, and then from, the X-Box. Unreal II...let's just say it peaked in the 2nd level and was downhill from there. UT2k3...looked good, but just wasn't all that fun to play.

HL2 needs to be put out soon, or risk looking like Duke Nukem Forever. I'll probably buy it if it comes out.

Right now, FarCry is probably the best thing to come out in awhile. It's a long FPS and quite challenging.

Yes, FarCry was/is rather sexy isnt it?

I still yearn for a CounterStrike that's just "better".

CZ was shoddy, but CSS(source) could be rather sexy too...

I never really got into CS, or much multiplayer outside of Unreal Tournament. I really enjoy a solid single player more than anything else. I'm not gonna say FarCry is the best thing ever, but in comparison with what's been offered in the past year or so, it looks really good.

personally i thought farcry was rather dull.. the graphics are absolutely amazing i mean i kinda said oh .. my .. god when i saw the water on the first level :O

however the game wasn't very original in terms of what you could do.. just another first person shooter type arcade game but with amazing graphics.

as for HL2 and DOOM 3 although i would never dream of downloading and trying either of the beta's *wink*.. i have mixed opions.. (but am keeping an open mind as both of them were non intended leaks..)

i'm looking forward to HL2 more than DOOM 3, purely for the aspect of Counter-Strike 2, i've played counter-strike since beta 5.2 and to this day i still love it.. it's the only online game i play.. single players i usually install.. play .. and uninstall..

HL2 will be fantastic for modifications.. using the heretic 2 physics engine or whatever.. + the fast pace and well needed tactics of counter-strike.. will just create an unbelievable new type of online first person..

DOOM3 well i was never really keen on any of the quake's e.t.c however i do enjoy looking back and remembering the days when i played my first games such as: DOOM and Castle Wolfenstein (all came on floppy discs or 5.25" diskettes!)

you can see my system below.. and i can tell you know that HL2 *WILL* run perfectly on medium quality.. (my cpu lets me down otherwise)

the problem is with both these games is that all though the developers know that whenever they release them.. and whatever they are like.. people will buy the product because of the predecessors having built such a huge reputation..

however this is a shame as i believe it makes them lazy in bringing it out.. and i highly doubt HL2 or DOOMIII will live up to their expectations.. especially after keeping fans waitint so long.

Counter-Strike 2 will be amazing. i'll be buying HL2 for CS and for its modification prospects.. not because its Half-Life 2, i highly doubt people will play HL2 multiplayer, they'll play it think.. its ok.. then download mods such as CS and play them..

that CS movie they put together on CS just simply looks incredible.. it almost made me man wee.

17, Uk, not claned -> will kill you when i meet you on a server though. Knife to the head? Awp in the groin?

Ive been on CS since 1.0.0.0 (retail first edition). And im glad someone agrees that the fan-bases are massive enough to carry the game anyway. HL2MP? They shouldnt bother, CS will ALWAYS have the biggest online user-base as it is has such an easy concept. think of other onlinbe games, all the successful ones are simple (UT, CS, AA, Tom Clancey games) concepts. Then think of the ones that have failed... far too many to list... They usualy fail because the player interaction is so poor (CS you work together or you loose, UT team play has some of that but too many people get used to shooting anythign that moves).

I also nearly sex-weed at the CSS vid - Azzy never looked so good in grey!

Lazyness on the developer side? debateable. Ive heard that the "script" for HalfLife2 is longer than "war and peace"... Its like a bible of the story line and things they wanna include in the game. And on the bungie.net website cameras you can see the VOLUMES of halo story line - > if you missed it its a full book case of binders with the "Lege" logo on the side.

I will PM you my email address so you can use steam friends to find me whenever youre after a bulet in the head (and i hope you dont like SG'nades. they lag me like a bitch).

And in closing [of this reply] > reckon Halo2 (nov 9th) will beat HL2 to the shelves?

    i havn't :) i've played since 0.52 :) (beta)

although i used to be alot better at cs than i am now, im reasonably shite :D

some of the better clans i've played for: clan-neo / clan-unity / f5 / alpha uk, more recently since about 1.3 i havn't really taken cs as seriously, as i just cant be bothered.

as i've said, i'll gladly give you a game Crimsen, although there is no need to be so hostile :) (seems ur abit attached to cs with the big head and all).

should be on tonight, depending if i have mass reports to do for work.

im not hostile, just defensive and prone to pwning...

    (btw name is spelt crimsOn).

When playing CS do you listen to music? some people do, its crazy, how can you hear people around corners or directions of fire if you have music going on?

I will however agree music helps loads when youre on a map like socutzknives, coz thats more like UT style frag-fests.

And what do you reckon the implications of the new physics will be on online gaming?

in the CSS demo you see a nade going into a bunch of barrels, barrels went flying, if the server sent you data saying "X threw nade to Y", surely each physics engin would move the barrels differently as the next gen engins work of "random patern" generation, much like particle movement in the "real world", so surely the server would need to say exactly where all the barrels went and that with other new things (like destructable scenery) would rape your bandwidth?

however, maybe the physics engins could be preset for online gameing, like have 5 different positions the barrels could end up in and the server only send which movement has occured, and the 5 preset movements would be in the map?

i think that process is how the new call of duty mods work online (but i havent played CoD online, i loved the single player though! MOTHER RUSSIA!).

    thoughts?

    CS ???

    Nah, RAVENSHIELD.

This game is awesome. First game in a long while that keeps me in front of the computer for straight hours.

Have you ever seen a Counter-Terrorist rush a guy with a knife or jump in the air to lure the Tango ? I don't think so.

    I'm telling you, try Ravenshield.

Yes i have seen successful knife rushes against AK's and even M60's. Ive seen a player kill 10 Terrorists with a knife on his own.

And i have seen a CT jump in the air to enable laser mode...

the specialists is cool, you can empty a clip of an mpk5 then do a back flip over the guy spraying at your back and pop him in the back of the head.then jump to the side taking cover behind a few boxes while you lay across the floor reloading with your crosshairs pointed at the wall waiting for him to pass buy so you can take him downnnn! but you misjudge him and he goes into slow mo and flips in the air filling you full of lead. then RESPAWN!
