it was all started by the american military it was originally used to send data over large areas where the time of delivery was very important they send it on the "network", the really old floppy discs were actually defined by the US post said the size of a letter is, i the time of delivery of the date wasn't that importart, they'd just send it in th mail i know it's very brief, but you get the idea BTW: if you want a long winded version there a history of the internet here
