How do you check if you have hardware problems on a Compaq mini 110 with XP operating system?

    I have recently been having problems with my computer. It has been crashing sometimes when I start it up. I recently purchased a system recovery disk but have not used it yet. I wanted to check if the problem lies with the hardware first. How do I check the computer for hardware issues before I do the system recovery. THankyou in advance
