So since I almost never reboot my system, I dont know how long this problem has been going on, but when I do reboot, my system (Debian etch), does not boot into X. It just hangs on the blank screen. Nvidia is working fine and no matter how many times I restart kdm, it is still the same problem. The only way I have found to get back into X is to install the nvidia drivers again and then start kdm. After I do this, my nvidia drivers continue to work just like they normally would, as long as I dont reboot. I dont know if anyone else here is having this problem, but I certainly am.

After googling the problem for a bit, I managed to find someone who had the problem and was able to "solve it" with a script he wrote. I say "solve" because it doesn't work for me at all (btw, he is running Debian etch also). Here is his instructions followed by a link to the original:
Original = nvidia works after build but not after reboot-Debian Linux Help-Linux Forums

Ok, so anybody have any ideas on how to fix this... its not a huge problem because I almost never reboot, but I still think it is a problem that I shouldn't have to deal with and shouldn't exist

I'm gona join you with this one...

I installed the nvidia drivers with automatix, but found them to be jumpy... so i downloaded and installed the current drivers from nvidia (and then killall gdm, sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-.... )

It complained and said that i needed to install the "x.org sdk/development" packages for my distribution... gave a load of other errors which i now cant remember now, when i install the x.org sdk it stopped complaining when i re-installed the drivers.

I've :swear: this one up at levels normally reserved for George Bush, any advice?

I'm not sure about the answer to your problem... in fact, I'm not quite sure what your problem is- one of your last lines is that it "stopped complaining" when you re-installed the drivers. Which gives me the impression that everything is fine now. What did I miss?

And my second piece of business is to encourage people around the HWF to help me figure out what is going wrong with my system.. I'd even be relieved to find out that some of you other Debian-etchers have the same problem (though I dont wish it upon you).

I haven't had any problems at all with X and the latest stable release of the NVidia binaries, but then again my workstation has been up for 50 days now, so... :O

...come to think of it, did you migrate to Etch from Sarge? There was some /dev/ stuff in Sarge that was obsoleted in Etch, and during some recent updates, dpkg "noticed" them and told me to remove them in less than polite terms. :)

The installer stopped complaining, and i can start x (startx) afterwards and it all works fine untill i restart :/ (after i've restarted startx fails)

I'm using the 9xxx drivers, and sometimes when X starts the resolution will be very low, although KDM works fine. I fix it by restarting X via the menu item.

This doesn't always happen, which is strange.

Yeah, i didn't realize that mine wasn't working either.. the first time I noticed it was maybe a week ago (i had to shut it down to move my computer), and my uptime at that point was 41 days... so I dont know... maybe it is because of a recent update.

As far as to etch from sarge, the answer is no. I installed etch fresh -- straight from the cd onto a freshly formatted drive. So Sarge definitely shouldn't have anything to do with it. But either way, help would be appreciated. And lately, it is especially obnoxious because I am in the process of moving so my system is being booted and shutdown fairly often while it is being physically moved and while im dealing with internet issues.

OK, OK, so I rebooted just to prove that it wasn't a Debian-specific issue (bye bye, 53+ day uptime!) Guess what? Booted right to X, pretty NVidia splash screen and everything. So in conclusion, whatever is going on isn't as widespread as you think. Let's start out with some log files, both /var/log/X.org.xxxx and /var/log/messages, and your x.org.conf wouldn't hurt either. :)

I have /var/log/Xorg.1.log and Xorg.0.log... both of which are pretty long. Here is Xorg.1.log. Boy, this is going to be long:

It may be a problem between that older driver version and the latest build of X.org, I don't know. Try doing a dist-upgrade, then install the 9xxx series driver and see if it helps.[ot]BTW, next time you post logs that long, please attach them to the post, don't just paste them in with
    Code:
tags... it's hard to read that way. :([/ot]

So after a couple of hours talking with AT on gaim, he managed to help me find a few nvidia scripts in /etc/rc3.d/ that I have no idea how they got there, that were trying to install 8774 drivers every time i rebooted. That's no good, obviously... so I had to
    Code:
     kdesu ksysv
and disable anything nvidia*. Once I had saved and exited, I went and reinstalled the nvidia 9629 drivers for good measure and rebooted. For the first time in a while, I savored my sweet victory. Anyway, I thought I would post accomplishment in hopes that it may help another person.

To summarize, just disable all NVidia-related scripts in all runlevels if you want to build the drivers yourself. Otherwise, the auto-scripts will break your handiwork.
