Too hot?
How do i know if my laptop is too hot? If i play games on my lap the thing gets so hot that i can't touch the bottom for more than a few seconds. Is this common for "gaming" laptops? My old HP got hot before, but i never played games on it and it was not too diesel of a computer. I tried using speedfan, and it reads both temps at around 38C...is this just what 38C feels like to the touch?

How much is body temperature supposed to be when you aren't sick, around 37,5 right? So 37,5 degrees celsius shouldn't be that hot resulting in not being able to touch it for more than a couple of seconds.
My guess is that speedfan doesn't read the temperature properly, isn't there an option in your systems bios that'll display temperature? Most CPU's and GPU's will operate around 50~60 degrees which is still safe though. I can't say this is normal for a laptop since I don't own one (yet) but since newer gaming laptops get equipped with Nvidia 7800 GO GPU's it's probably normal for those temps to be that high. It's normal variant will easily surpass that temperature. Greetings

Ok, so yeah ive read reviews of people that purchased cooling pads on newegg, most of the purchased cooling pads b/c the operating temps of the outside were hot , too hot to handle. so, next question is which cooling pad should i get? any recommendations?

That all depends on what you find more important; noise production, price, design, brand? Since there's so many types available and me not having experience with them it's hard to suggest one to you. I would go for the most practical solution;
Some notebook coolers contain fans designed to push air out the side of the cooler, as well as the bottom. They suck the hot air from the bottom of the notebook, and expel it to the sides and bottom. Some are USB-powered, and therefore do not require an electrical outlet. I suggest you look for product reviews to gain more info about one you might have your eyes on, so you'll know how well it performs when you actually buy it. Greetings, Ignite

There's a nice one on zipzoomfly that has usb ports, noise is never a problem with me as i'm used to playing games with the volume all the way up; and if i'm not playing games i don't need the fans so i can turn it off. I think its between these two, but i don't know if the 2nd one needs to be plugged into the wall for the fans to work....not a deal breaker, but more wires means more tripping up for me.

Too bad those Zipzoomfly links give me a "page unavailble" error, maybe it's because I'm overseas instead of the US. Look for extra specifications on the notebook cooler's manufacturer websites if that Zipzoomfly doesn't provide that info. Maybe that's why it's cheaper? Less service means lower pricing
 Some brands sell usb powered laptops but do not include a usb cable to connect it; CoolerMaster does this for instance (I just read that  )Good luck with it, and greetings.

Laptops on your lap does get kind of annoying, when typing they can just wobble about.
beretta9m2f - have you checked idle temps in BIOS? Those temps you quoted (38*C) are they just after you've been gaming? Try to get readings of idle temps and temps whilst/just after gaming. Also try checking in your BIOS to see if there's any discrepancies (sp?) between that and SpeedFan. http://www.overclockers.com/articles1071/ That seems like a very good cooler. (google search)
